Development of an Ergonomic Keyboard with Current Letter Layout for Turkish Language

Abstract
Due to the increase in computer usage, the keyboard, the most basic input unit of the computer, can be seen almost every moment of life. Based on the invention of the historic typewriter, the keyboard has always been the subject of new studies throughout its development process. Focusing on fast writing and language-specific key layout in early days, studies in recent years have recently taken ergonomic factors into consideration and included new methods. One problem that has been addressed throughout the history of the keyboard and is still the subject of new studies is the keyboard layout problem aiming at placing the position of the letter keys on the keyboard in the most meaningful way. Providing the optimum keystroke arrangement is important for preventing occupational health problems, the loss of time and improving the performance. In this study, the method which can be applied to every language and aims at realizing the letter placement on the keyboard according to the current usage of the language was applied to Turkish. The unigram, bigram and trigram frequency information of the letters in the database consisting of the current words are extracted. By evaluating this information according to the defined design principles, a new key layout has been achieved which makes Turkish writing easy, fast and ergonomic. The new layout is thought to be the basis for much more useful applications with word prediction applications.
