Study on The Effects of Sic Based Power Electronic Devices on Performance of Electrical Vehicle Power Train

Abstract
Utilizing SiC power semiconductors in the powertrain of an electrified vehicle will be advantageous due to the high-temperature capability, high-power density, and high efficiency of these switches. The light weight and small volume of SiC devices also will positively affect the performance and cost of the electric drivetrain. In this paper, the electric drive portion of an electrified vehicle is under study. In the electric drive, a DC/DC converter, which connects the battery and DC bus, and a motor inverter are two potential devices that uses power semiconductors. In this study, the focus is on the impact of applying SiC based semiconductors in these two devices while potentially auxiliary DC/DC converter and generator rectifier (in Series HEV) can also be added to this study which has not been included in this manuscript. The overall efficiencies of SiC and IGBT based electric drivetrain is compared. At the end it will be shown that how much range can be extend by additional efficiency brought by SiC based power electronic devices.
